Mexico
The cartels of Mexico have become more and more powerful over the years. The Mexican government does not seem to possess the power to curb the cartels, and the cartels bribe many government officials to boot. These conditions have resulted in thousands and thousands of Mexicans fleeing to the United States, many of whom are seeking political asylum.
According to the US Department of Homeland Security, over 23,000 Mexicans applied for political asylum in the beginning of 2013, which was four times the requests made in 2009. The immigrants fear for their lives and believe that transfers to refugee status. Unfortunately, 90% of these requests are denied, because these claims do not meet the legal standards of a refugee, or prove credible fear of persecution on the basis of race, religion, nationality, or membership in a political or social group. As Peter Nunez, a former US Attorney and member of the Treasury Department under George H. W. Bush, said: "That doesn't qualify them for refugee status. Its not the American government's role to do what the Mexican government cannot do."
