In 1992, war broke out in Bosnia- Herzegovina. Bosnian Serbs laid siege to Sarajevo for three years-- in that time, the average weight loss per person was thirty pounds. Over 12,000 people died in the siege, and an estimated 20,000 to 50,000 women were raped over the course of the three year war.
It was among this turmoil that Natalie and her younger brother fled to the United States. Her family had been especially at risk, since her father was a Bosnian Serb and her mother was Croatian.
